8/10
The whole of PinkPantheress' debut album, to hell with it, clocks in at 19 minutes. Previously the only albums I'd listened to under 20 minutes were by Grindcore artists, not teenage pop vocalists/producers. Is this a sign of gen-z's waning attention spans, or is that just PinkPanteress' style? I'd wager we'll see many more albums go this way to A) fit songs to the length restrictions of TikTok videos and B) increase streaming revenue through repeated plays (you get paid the same on Spotify if someone streams your 30 second song as you do if they stream your 5 minute song).
I first became aware of PinkPantheress after hearing the album closer, Break It Off. To say that this samples Circles by Adam F does not do Adam F justice. PinkPantheress simply took Circles and, without manipulating it at all, sang over it. When some artists do this, I consider it lazy, however I was completely taken with this song. Initially, I thought Reason was a similar endeavour, when in fact it's one of the few songs on the album not to use sampling. This time her co-producer, Zach Nahome, put the beat together, but it still tugs at the 90s Drum 'n' Bass nostalgia of her previous work. PP's vocals are gentle, well written and as catchy as ever.
